The honest summary
PDFMonkey's value is the template-plus-data model. You design a template once in their visual editor using Liquid; then the API fills it from JSON. Marketers can edit templates without touching code. The output quality is high.
LightningPDF overlaps on the visual designer and the API, but our core thesis is different. We sell on:
- A Go-native engine that prints simple documents in under 100ms.
- Chromium for complex layouts with zero font configuration for Indic, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, and CJK.
- Validator-passing structured e-invoicing for Belgium, Germany, Saudi Arabia, India, and Japan.
- Plugins for WordPress and Shopify that run on the same API.
Pick PDFMonkey if the Liquid-template ergonomics matter most. Pick us if multilingual, regulatory, or speed matters most.

When PDFMonkey is the right choice
- Your team relies on the Liquid template editor. Marketers update templates without help from engineering. This is a real productivity win on content-heavy generators (mailers, certificates, branded receipts).
- The PDFMonkey API design fits your existing workflow.
- You have no regulatory e-invoicing requirement and no multilingual non-Latin requirement.
When LightningPDF is the right choice
- You face the Belgian mandate (2026-01-01), German mandate (2027-01-01 / 2028-01-01), or any of ZATCA, India GST, or Japan qualified invoice. The structured XML leg is in the API; PDFMonkey does not produce it.
- Your customers read in non-Latin scripts. Our Chromium renderer ships with the same font fallback chain as Chrome, so Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, and CJK render without uploading fonts to your template.
- You want a generation path under 100ms for simple documents. The Go-native engine handles common shapes (receipts, packing slips, simple invoices) faster than any Chromium-backed engine can.
- You sell on Shopify or WordPress and want a plugin that installs in two clicks.
What we will not claim
We will not claim our designer ergonomics match PDFMonkey's for non-technical editors. PDFMonkey's Liquid editor is more polished for that audience. Our designer is built for developers and designers who want to write HTML/CSS. If your bottleneck is letting marketers edit templates without filing a ticket, PDFMonkey wins on that axis.
