The honest summary
PDFShift is the most direct analog to LightningPDF's core HTML-to-PDF surface. Both are Chromium-backed, both have clean APIs, both have similar entry-tier pricing. The differences are in what we add on top.
If your use case is one of the standard HTML-to-PDF jobs (receipts, simple reports, contracts in Latin script) either of us will serve you well. PDFShift has a longer track record on this surface and a more refined polish on the dashboard.
If your use case touches multilingual rendering or you face a regulated e-invoicing mandate, the conversation tilts our way.

|---|---|---|
| Free | 100/mo | 50/mo |
| Starter | $9/mo for 500 | $9/mo for 500 |
| Mid-tier | $19/mo for 2,500 | $29/mo for 5,000 |

If you live in the 2,500-to-5,000 PDFs-per-month range, the cost-per-PDF favors PDFShift. If you live under 2,500, the cost-per-PDF favors us. If you grow past 10,000, both have similar effective rates.
When PDFShift is the right choice
- You already integrate with PDFShift and the work is stable. The switching cost is not worth the multilingual gap if your customers do not need it.
- Your volume sits in the 2,500 to 5,000 PDFs-per-month band and the per-PDF price difference matters to you.
When LightningPDF is the right choice
- Your audience includes non-Latin scripts. Indic, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, CJK render without configuration. PDFShift can do this but you upload the fonts and the layout requires manual tuning.
- You face a regulated e-invoicing mandate. We emit Peppol BIS 3.0, ZUGFeRD, Factur-X, ZATCA Phase 2, India GST, and Japan qualified invoice. PDFShift is generation-only.
- You want PDF post-processing in the same API. Merge, split, compress, extract text, password protect, all under the same key.
- You sell on Shopify or WooCommerce. The Paperbolt plugin / app installs in two clicks and runs on our infrastructure.
What we will not claim
We will not claim PDFShift's API is harder to use. It is not. Their endpoint structure is clean, the docs are good, and the developer experience is well-loved by their existing customers. We compete on the cases where multilingual rendering or regulatory output matters; we do not compete on developer ergonomics being meaningfully different.
